General Treatment
Two of the most common forms of treatment for periodontal disease used at Moonee Ponds Periodontic & Implant Centre are scaling and root planing.
Scaling involves removal of the tartar that has stuck to tooth surfaces, while root planing involves removing any remaining tartar and smoothing down the root surface. Depending on how severe your issues are, treatment can be completed in two to four visits, with each visit lasting between 30-60 minutes.
During each visit, your periodontist will use ultrasonic equipment and hand instruments to carry out the relevant procedures. You may experience tenderness in your gums for a day or two, as well as heightened sensitivity to heat and cold. This generally goes away in a week or so.
Following completion of this phase of treatment, you will be asked to make a follow up appointment in approximately 3-4 months with either the treating Periodontist or one of our Hygienists. If all is stable, you will be placed on a periodontal maintenance programme.
