Following Up on Periodontal Treatment
Once your disease has been stabilised you will be placed in a maintenance programme which is conducted by the hygiene department at Moonee Ponds Periodontic & Implant Centre. Your periodontist will still be involved in your care but most of the maintenance programme is conducted by our highly experienced Hygienists. As gum disease tends to reoccur, maintenance therapy is an important part in stopping periodontal disease from progressing.
At your maintenance visit, our hygienists will assess and monitor the health or your gums, and review oral hygiene techniques. This may include refining the way you brush your teeth and instruction in how to use floss and interdental brushes. Also, any plaque, calculus or staining that has occurred will be removed. These appointments usually take around 45 minutes.
After your maintenance visit and once the disease process has been stabilised:
- Your mouth will look and feel healthier
- Gum tissues become pink and firmer
- Bad breath and bleeding gums will improve
- Your teeth will look and feel smooth and clean
- You will have a better chance of keeping your teeth
We believe that regular specialist maintenance is the most important phase of periodontal treatment.

Why Is On-Going Periodontal Care Important?
As you’ve learnt, periodontal disease is very common, and begins with the bacteria-filled plaque that is constantly building up on your teeth. The bacteria in this plaque consistently produce toxins that continue to attack your gums and teeth. Daily brushing and flossing/inter dental cleaning will help minimise the formation of plaque and tartar, but won’t completely prevent it. No matter how careful you are in cleaning your teeth and gums, bacterial plaque can cause a recurrence of gum disease if left undisturbed for too long after your last professional cleaning (typically 2-6 months).
That’s why it’s essential that you follow a periodontal maintenance programme, to check for hidden problems and remove the hardened plaque both above and below the gum line and minimise the risk of disease recurrence so that your teeth and gums stay healthy. Protecting your periodontal health through preventive maintenance has great benefits for you. You will be able to chew with more comfort, and you will be able to smile and speak with greater confidence. You will be able to keep dental costs down by preventing future problems.
