There are instances where root planing and scaling are ineffective at treating periodontal disease. In these cases, Moonee Ponds Periodontic & Implant Centre has a wide range of corrective gum surgeries and ongoing support for our patients in Melbourne. Call today to learn more.
At Moonee Ponds Periodontic & Implant Centre, gum lifts are performed with three things in mind: your comfort, quick interventions and minimal recovery time. Our qualified periodontists use the latest techniques to ensure that your gum lift is performed to the highest standards. While the procedures are minimally invasive, you may experience some soreness or swelling for up to a week.
The process involves making a pinhole in your gum tissue and insert a special tool to gently reposition your gums back into a healthy, normal position. There is no cutting or suturing involved, and tiny collagen strips are placed into the pinhole to help with the healing process. Once the procedure is complete, you will be given an ice pack and instructions that you must follow to the letter. These include eating soft foods and avoiding foods that are spicy or that have seeds. We will also book a follow-up appointment to ensure your gums have healed properly.

Periodontal Flap Surgery
Flap surgery is a more invasive procedure that is reserved for severe cases of periodontal disease. Typically done under sedation, a small incision is made to separate the gums from the teeth. The outer gum tissue is gently folded back to give access to the roots and the supporting ligament and bone tissue.
This allows the expert periodontists at Moonee Ponds Periodontic & Implant Centre to remove the inflamed gum tissue and clean the tooth’s roots. If needed, the area can be treated with antibiotics and other medication at the same time. Bone defects can be repaired with grafting material, and proper regeneration of the periodontal ligament can be encouraged by physical and chemical methods. Finally, the incision is closed, and the procedure is completed.
Flap surgery has an excellent track record and offers well-established benefits. It's often our treatment of choice for relieving severe bouts of periodontal disease and helping to maintain your oral health — in turn preserving your teeth.
